The importance of preparing and eating your own meals

Of all the things we can do for our health preparing our meals should be a consistent one. Whether it’s daily or every 2nd or 3rd day for a few days at a time this is an important aspect of staying on track to hit your health and fitness goals.

Everyone gets caught up in the busyness of life and the result of that will be what’s convenient at the time.

Looking at statistics shows that the average person spends less than 25 minutes per day getting their meals ready. Is everyone really that busy? I don’t think so! It comes down to creating a habit and being aware of the importance of healthy eating. Another stat I was interested to see is the average person will watch over 120 hours of T.V per month. Have we really become this lazy???

Learning to cook and creating some great healthy recipes is one of those essential skills humans should have. To be able to cook great nutritious meals is a great reward for you and what you put in your body.

I understand how nice it is to be able to go out and socialize with friends whilst enjoying a beautiful feast but that’s usually no more than 5% of the time throughout the week.

Eating in is in almost every case healthier and much more economical. Most of us would be hard pressed to find a restaurant near us (they do exist), with local and organic suppliers, there are the still the question marks lingering on the menu. What kind of oil do they use for cooking? What kind of cookware. Is there bacteria build up from the previous meal they cooked.

While I enjoy going out and have no intention of giving up that pleasure, it’s a peace of mind in knowing every facet of my dinner and what is used to cook the meal I’m getting compared to the larger scale of conventional “eating out” choices, that you just cant be sure your getting the quality your paying for.

The better the cooks we are, the easier and more varied our diets can be. The principle worked for our ancestors and it applies to us this day in age also.

The more skills you can learn in the kitchen can go a long way with creating flavours you really enjoy and making more satisfying meals to keep you on track with your nutrition plan like for example roasting vegetables that you cant deal with eating when steamed or baking some fish fillets with spices that taste to plain when in the pan or adding certain good oils to cooked foods. The little tweaks here and there with your food prep can go a long way with the flavour.
